To be a good fit for the Quality Assurance Manager opportunity, you should have:
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of QA Engineering management or team lead experience, ideally including experience transforming manual testing teams to high efficiency, automation-centric software QA teams Quick question for you - click here
  • 3+ years of experience with performance testing and benchmarking
  • 2+ years of working knowledge building out automation frameworks within enterprise QA including:
    • Knowledge of best practices for building, maintaining and retiring test cases and frameworks
    • Experience overseeing and directing the development of new test frameworks and applications to ensure the implementation of automated test solutions
  • Experience with Agile Scrum methodology
  • Experience across the full software development life cycle, from conception, design, implementation, and testing to documentation, delivery, and maintenance

Reporting to the VP of Software Engineering, you will be responsible for establishing the vision and direction for Quality Assurance, and for directing the day-to-day operations of the teams that perform software testing. This includes 2-4 direct reports in Montreal and India, as well as vendor-supplied QA resources in Bolivia and Ethiopia whose work you will manage. Some of our teams are still working with manual testing frameworks, so one of your main goals will be to bring in best practices for automation and help convert to an automation framework.

More About Your Requirements

Preferred but not required:
  • Experience establishing a new test organization including, defining, training, enforcing and executing standards and compliance, root cause analysis and defect prevention techniques, testing tool standards and reports, and QA knowledge management and training
  • Ability to create a Testing Architecture discipline and resources to lead test strategy development for enterprise and complex systems, define test environment and test data requirements, and develop and executes a global reliability and test strategy
Our preference is that you are based in the Montreal area, though we also will consider qualified candidates in other areas. If you are based remotely, you’ll need to travel to Montreal on occasion. You are expected to work during normal business hours Monday to Friday Eastern time; however, due to the project-oriented nature of the work and the globally distributed teams, you may occasionally work evenings or weekends to meet deadlines or solve unexpected technical problems.

More About Your Role 

You will spend most of your time at the strategy level, and your teams will do the hands-on QA work. It will be your task to establish and communicate corporate objectives and vision, to align the team around this vision in their day-to-day work, and to build a strategy that delivers quality software on time. You will also staff and train your team, report out routine software quality metrics, automate testing for every imaginable scenario, provide quality estimates on user stories/tasks, and participate in creating resource plans for budgeting.

Some of your specific tasks will be to:
  • Design, implement and manage the overall strategy for the Quality Assurance team.
  • Scope and manage the manual and automation effort with a focus on repeatable and efficient testing.
  • Create, measure, and report out key metrics for the performance of the QA team, as well as the quality and health of the various product lines.
  • Leverage resources to ensure adequate test coverage and establish best practices.
  • Lead multiple QA teams on the implementation of test strategies and set the team up for the future by bringing progressive testing concepts to our organization that focus on efficiency.
  • Lead the design and implementation of testing frameworks, test infrastructure and tools to perform full end-to-end testing of our software products.
  • Own the QA defect processes and documentation and ensure that a standard process is being followed across the organization, and that proper tooling and reporting are in place.
  • Act as a player/coach and bring leadership and guidance to the quality team across all facets of manual and automated testing efforts.
  • Collaborate with Development, Product Owners, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality products and processes.
  • Understand business objectives and build alignment and buy-in across functional teams.
  • Motivate all team members to deliver high-quality projects within committed time and budget.
  • Coach, mentor and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities.
  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals while delegating responsibility and expect accountability and regular feedback.

More About Your Success

This role requires a strong leader who understands how to serve the team, help them succeed, and keep everyone working together. If you are accustomed to Agile Scrum methodology you’ll easily adapt to the style here. To excel in this role, you’ll need to have a collaborative nature, be able to work with different teams who use the QA resources, and communicate with other leaders who may give your team members direction, with product owners, and with other stakeholders.

You will need to ramp up your knowledge quickly to be able to make contributions. If you’re the right candidate for this role, you will take what the QA team learns and feed it back to the developers in a way that helps drive thoughts on shaping the product, usability, etc. Most of your time will be spent guiding the team on best practices as we move towards automation, so you’ll need to always be looking for the best plan, the best resource, etc.
